Rockwell B-1B Lancer (The Bone)

Since the B-1B first became operational on 1 October 1986, the aircraft has undergone an almost constant upgrade program. The B-1B System Program Office (SPO) based at Wright-Patterson AFB (very near the USAF Museum) is responsible for "...Upgrading and sustaining the B-1B fleet in an affordable and timely manner." One continuing program is the Conventional Mission Upgrade Program which includes a number of weapons upgrade phases. The latest upgrade to be incorporated into the aircraft makes the B-1B capable of carrying Cluster Bomb Units (CBU). Up to 10 CBU devices can be carried in each of the B-1B's three bomb bays (for a total of 30). The CBU itself contains a number of submunitions -- up to a maximum of 202 bomblets per device (CBU-87). The next upgrade program will integrate Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation and Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) capability into the B-1B. Other planned upgrade projects include upgrade of the aircraft computers (guidance, navigation, weapons delivery, terrain following, etc.) and defensive systems. Weapons upgrades planned include the capability to carry the Joint Defense Attack Munition (JDAM), Wind Corrected Munition Dispenser (WCMD), and a Towed Decoy System (TDS). These programs will continue through 2004 and further enhancement programs will allow the B-1B to continue in USAF service until 2010 and beyond.
