Burt had three brothers that were all in the Navy during W.W.II, but due to severe Asthma he was ineligible for military service. Instead, he used his schooling to help on the home front and became an aeronautical engineer for two of the largest aircraft manufacturers. Below are the aircraft he helped design and manufacturer for the US Army Air Corps and USAF. Years later, he traveled the world working for Philco, installing the tracking antennas used in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. Burt was the father of Tim Johnson, Former MTIA Web Master.

Burt Johnson loved working on the B49 Flying Wing. He was there on that heartbreaking day that Secretary of the Air Force, Stuart Simington, ordered the 15 operational Wings, cut up and destroyed over an argument Jim Northrop had with him about helping Consolidated fix the problems with their B36 Peace Keeper. The original blue prints of the B49 were referenced in the construction of the current B2 Flying Wing. No original B49s exist today.
