The 433rd was the first Reserve unit to be activated in the Air Education and Training Command, starting in 1983 with a handful of people. Initially, some active-duty people were skeptical that a Reserve unit would be able to "fit in" and perform at the "Gateway to the Air Force." Those initial concerns were soon put to rest, however, as the 433rd TRS proved itself to be a very capable, mission-ready partner.
The unit's performance was validated by an initial rating of excellent from the 737th Training Group standardization and evaluation team. Subsequently, the 433rd has received an overall rating of outstanding on its past five inspections. As the unit's reputation grew, so did its size. Today it has authorizations for 74 enlisted people, two officers and one civilian.
The unit has been through some very trying times this past year. Budget cuts from AETC and AFRC has downsized the unit from 76 billets to 26. The biggest change in the unit in the past year has been that Reserve MTIs are no longer placed on long orders to augment 737th Training Group. Typically, 433 TRS supported the 737th TRG with ranges of 4-10 MTIs on a daily basis, 365 days a year. The manning thrust of 737th Training Group, teetering on an unheard of 95% or better has hampered the Reserve MTIs. Several 433 TRS MTIs have stepped back into the Active Duty role and are on an Extended Active Duty (EAD) tour within BMT.
The members who are now EAD are MSgt Robert Hembree, now assigned to the 323rd Training Squadron, TSgt Michael Diaz, now assigned to the 331st Training Squadron, TSgt Frank Martin, now assigned to the 326th Training Squadron, TSgt Jesse Gomez, now assigned to the Military Training Instructor School. During the year of 2004, 433 TRS MTIs played a vital role at the United States Air Force Academy. 9 MTIs were assigned to the Basic Cadet Training program which is similar to enlisted basic training. The role of the MTI was a very important one! Each MTI set the ground rules, training philosophies and assisted with the molding of over 1,300 basic cadets to enter the AF Academy upon completion of their Basic Cadet Training. Also, MTIs from the 433 TRS were responsible for the Reserve Officer Training encampments at Ellsworth AFB, SD., Tyndall AFB, FL., and Lackland AFB, TX and were responsible for the training of over 1,500 basic cadets and mentored 500 senior cadets in leadership roles.
The unit also coordinated, trained and participated in the retirement of the AFRC/CC at Robins ARB, GA for Lt Gen Sherrard. Since 1983, MTIs of the 433 TRS have participated in thousands of retirements, change of commands across the nation. The 433 TRS is the 'go-to' within the AF Reserve Command in regards to drill and ceremonies. The 737th Training Group also leans on the unit for guidance in the training environment due to the caliber and experience level of the unit.
