No other career field is so selectively chosen. One cannot just apply to serve in this special duty from the day they enter the United States Air Force. Airmen and NCOs must first prove their mettle in their original career fields.

Those who submit applications and are ultimately selected for this demanding duty are unquestionably the very best within their specialties. Those with less than stellar credentials need not apply. Potential MTIs begin their journey by entering the fourteen-week long Military Training Instructor School.
